Claude Chat vs Code vs Cowork vs Design: Pick Your Fighter
Four doors into the same model
Claude Chat is the one everyone knows: a conversation where you ask and it answers. Over the past year Anthropic has put three more doors in front of the same model, and each one is built to do work rather than talk about it. Picking the right door is most of the skill.
Claude Code: for shipping software
Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent. It reads and edits your codebase, runs commands, and works through a task end to end. Anthropic describes it as helping developers build, debug and ship, and it runs almost anywhere a developer already is: the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains, a desktop app, the web, mobile, GitHub and Slack. Pick it when the output is a change to code.
Claude Cowork: for office work in your files
Cowork is the door for everyone who is not writing code. Anthropic’s framing is “say what, not how”: you give it a task in plain language, point it at a folder, and it works through your files and apps while showing each step, the files it opens, the tools it uses and the choices it makes. It connects to Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Slack and similar services, carries a built-in browser for forms and web pages, and can run scheduled tasks that keep going after your laptop is closed. Anthropic’s own examples are weekly marketing reports, reconciling spreadsheets, checking contracts against a playbook and analysing sales calls. It runs on desktop and the web, with mobile in beta, on the paid plans.
Claude Design: for the visuals
Design, launched by Anthropic Labs on April 17, 2026, is the door for anything you would otherwise open a design tool for. You describe what you need, Claude builds a first version, and you refine it by talking or editing directly. Anthropic lists prototypes, slides, one-pagers, landing pages, wireframes, pitch decks and social assets, powered by Claude Opus 4.7 as its vision model. Output leaves as a shareable link, Canva, PDF, PPTX or standalone HTML, and there is a handoff into Claude Code when a prototype should become real software. It is in research preview for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscribers.
How to pick
Ask what the finished thing is. A paragraph of understanding: Chat. A commit: Code. A report, a reconciled sheet, a reviewed contract: Cowork. A deck, a mockup, a landing page: Design. The four share one model and, since Anthropic unified memory across Chat and Cowork in August, increasingly share what they know about you, so switching doors costs less than it used to.

Common questions
- Do I need separate subscriptions for each one?
- No. Code, Cowork and Design are included with the paid Claude plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise). Design is in research preview and Code has its own usage tiers.
- Which one should a non-developer start with?
- Cowork. It works on your files and apps from plain instructions and shows every step it takes, with no terminal involved.
- Can Design hand a mockup to Code?
- Yes. Anthropic lists a handoff to Claude Code among Design's export options, next to Canva, PDF, PPTX and standalone HTML.
