The Company That Prints Every AI Chip: ASML, Explained

The company behind every advanced chip

ASML is a Dutch company most people have never heard of, and it sits under the entire AI industry. It builds photolithography machines: the systems that print circuit patterns onto silicon. For the most advanced chips, that step needs extreme ultraviolet light, and ASML is the only company on the planet that makes EUV scanners. Nikon and Canon walked away from the technology more than a decade ago. There is no runner-up.

What EUV lithography does

Every chip is built by projecting a pattern onto a wafer, over and over, in layers. The smaller the wavelength of light, the smaller the features you can print. EUV uses light at 13.5 nanometers, produced by blasting droplets of tin with a laser inside a machine the size of a bus. Each system carries hundreds of thousands of parts and costs hundreds of millions of dollars. Only TSMC, Samsung and Intel operate them at scale.

High-NA: the 2026 milestone

The current frontier is High-NA EUV, which widens the lens aperture from 0.33 to 0.55 to print even finer features. On July 15, 2026, ASML announced that Intel Foundry had entered high-volume manufacturing on High-NA EUV, producing its Intel Core Ultra Series 3 chips, code-named Panther Lake, on the Intel 18A node. It was the first high-volume logic product made this way. ASML’s CEO, Christophe Fouquet, called it a substantial development in semiconductor lithography.

Why it is the stack’s single point of failure

Trace any AI accelerator, phone or laptop back far enough and you reach an ASML machine in a fab in Taiwan, South Korea or Oregon. That is what makes the company a chokepoint: not size, but the absence of an alternative. The models, the agents and the data centers all sit on top of chips that only one vendor’s tools can print. When people ask where the AI boom could bottleneck, this is the honest answer.

Common questions

What does ASML actually make?
The machines that print the finest features on advanced chips. Its extreme ultraviolet (EUV) scanners are the only ones in the world; Nikon and Canon left the technology over a decade ago.
What is High-NA EUV?
The newest generation, with a 0.55 numerical aperture lens versus 0.33 on earlier EUV. It prints smaller features and enables the 2nm node and beyond. Intel began high-volume production with it in July 2026.
Why does one company matter so much?
Every leading-edge processor, including the GPUs behind modern AI, depends on ASML's machines. There is no second supplier, so the whole advanced-chip supply chain runs through one vendor.
