The Foundry Behind Everything: TSMC, Explained
The company you have never bought from
You have never bought a TSMC product, yet you are almost certainly holding one. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company makes the chips inside your phone, your laptop, your car and nearly every server training AI models. It is one of the most valuable companies on Earth, and most people have never heard its name. That is by design: TSMC does not sell chips to you, it sells manufacturing to the companies whose logos you do recognize.
What a foundry does
Most chip companies do not own factories. Apple, Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm design their chips and then hand the blueprints to someone else to build. That someone is a foundry, and TSMC invented the pure-play version of the model: it manufactures other people’s designs and competes with none of them. That neutrality is the product. A designer can trust TSMC with its most secret plans precisely because TSMC will never ship a phone or a GPU of its own.
The 2nm node everyone is fighting over
The reason the whole industry lines up at one door is that TSMC is furthest ahead. Its newest process, called N2 or 2nm, entered volume production in the fourth quarter of 2025. It is TSMC’s first node built on gate-all-around nanosheet transistors, and TSMC rates it at roughly 15% more speed or 30% less power than its 3nm node, with higher density on top. Early capacity was reportedly sold out for the year, with Apple taking more than half of it and the rest split among the AI chip designers.
Why one island holds the stack
TSMC held about 70% of the global foundry market in 2025, and a far larger share of the leading edge, where Samsung and Intel trail. Almost all of that advanced capacity sits in Taiwan. New fabs in Arizona are years from matching it. So the same pattern that makes ASML a chokepoint repeats one layer up: the models and the data centers all run on chips that, for now, essentially one company on one island knows how to build.

Common questions
- What does TSMC actually make?
- Other companies' chips. TSMC is a pure-play foundry: Apple, Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm design the chips, and TSMC manufactures them. It sells nothing under its own brand, which is why you never see its name.
- How dominant is it?
- It held roughly 70% of the global foundry market in 2025, and an even larger share of the most advanced chips. Samsung, its nearest rival, sits in the single digits.
- What is the 2nm (N2) node?
- TSMC's newest process, in volume production since late 2025. It uses gate-all-around nanosheet transistors and is about 15% faster or 30% lower power than its 3nm node. Apple reportedly took over half the early capacity.
