Nvidia Bought the Open-Source AI Hub: Hugging Face, Explained
What Nvidia announced
On September 3, 2026, Nvidia agreed to acquire Hugging Face for 12.93 billion dollars. Hugging Face is the platform where millions of developers publish, download and run open models and datasets, and it has spent years positioning itself as the neutral, vendor-agnostic hub of open-source AI. The buyer is the company that already sells most of the chips those models run on. That is what makes this more than a routine acquisition.
What the deal actually is
The structure is roughly 11.9 billion dollars to Hugging Face’s stockholders plus up to 1 billion dollars in equity to keep its staff. It is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approval, so nothing changes hands tomorrow. Nvidia’s public message is continuity: Hugging Face stays an open platform for the whole ecosystem, developers keep their choice of models, frameworks and clouds, and, in Nvidia’s own words, Nvidia compute will not be required to build on or deploy through the platform.
Why the promise matters
Hugging Face’s value was always its neutrality. Developers trusted it precisely because it did not belong to any one chip or cloud vendor. Owned by Nvidia, that neutrality becomes a promise rather than a structural fact. The commitments above are the right ones to make, and also the ones to hold Nvidia to over time: default model recommendations, integration depth, pricing of hosted inference, and which hardware gets first-class support are all levers a new owner controls.
Why it matters for the stack
The open-model movement grew up as a counterweight to closed labs, and Hugging Face was its town square. Putting the town square inside the most powerful company in AI infrastructure does not end open source, but it concentrates it. If you build on Hugging Face, the practical question is not whether it stays online, it is whether “open” keeps meaning portable, so your models and workflows still move to other hardware and clouds without friction. That portability is the thing to keep testing, regardless of what the press release says.

Common questions
- How much is Nvidia paying?
- About $12.93 billion: roughly $11.9 billion to Hugging Face's stockholders plus up to $1 billion in equity to retain staff. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approval.
- Will Hugging Face stay open?
- Nvidia says yes. It says the platform stays open to any model, framework and cloud, and that Nvidia compute will not be required to build on or deploy through it. Whether that holds is the thing to watch.
- Why does Nvidia want it?
- Hugging Face is where millions of developers find, share and run open models. Owning the hub puts Nvidia at the center of the open-model ecosystem, on top of its dominance in chips.
